Contemporary libraries give more and more access to readers. However, apart from benefits, also threats are involved. With more people given access to a library the risk of a loss of precious books by theft is greater.
Traditional library protection systems against thefts base on anti-theft gates and alarm tags lodged in books. These systems offer a good, however, not a satisfactory protection. The main shortcoming of these systems is they are activated only after a theft has been done, and their basic job is exclusively to make it difficult to carry stolen books out of a library. Such an attempt activates sound and optical alarm signals.
In many cases protection by traditional methods is not enough and does not prevent thefts. Integrated protection systems are more efficient. Library integrated protection systems consists of the following components: SPK - traditional anti-theft system (gates, alarm tags) The SPK, SPID, SKD systems are closely linked as reader’s ID-devices (proximity, magnetic) emitted under the SPID system serve as SKF access keys within the SKD – system, which responds to an attempt of carrying away a book etc. by blocking exits from protected areas. In addition a SNTV system (cameras, recorders) remembers alarm event images thus making it easy to identify offenders. A further advantage is a reader’s ID card can be used for other systems within a library or school etc. premises. SIDB – system to identify a library document
